Join The People’s Film Club at the Institute of Light on Thursday 23rd of August for a screening of Gaza Surf Club. The evening will be in aid of Explore Corps, a charity at the core of the surfing scene in Gaza. Before the film, we will be joined by Andy Martin, writer of the cult classic Walking on Water and the first journalist to have a surfing column in a British newspaper.

“The sea plays the role of the psychotherapist here. It’s the psychotherapist of two million people.”

Gaza Surf Club explores what it means to be young and living a life under occupation. The documentary tells the story of young people taking to the waves in the Gaza Strip, where they yearn for an escape from one of the world’s most battle-scarred regions.

Focusing on the protagonists’ struggles to do what they love, the documentary sheds light on women’s rights under the fundamentalist Hamas regime, and resilience in the face of societal and familial pressure in this celebration of youth, self-expression, and the dreams which lie in all of us.

The screening will be followed by a short video from the founder of Explore Corps, made specially for this event.
